History, which was created by the British in 1858, is named after its headquarters town. Tradition has it that the town was founded by the Bhars and was known as Bharauli or Barauli which in course of time got corrupted into Bareli. The prefix, Rae, is said to be a corruption of Rahi, a village 5km. west of the town. It is also said that the prefix, Rae, represents Rae, the common title of the Kayasths who were masters of the town for a considerable period of time. The standard of education was not upto the mark before Independance in the district. Several schools were estabilished by the Britishers in the rural areas of the district but those were not enough. Small children had to go miles away from their homes for education. But after Independance there are significant achievments in the field of Education in the district.
The first high school was established by Rajshree Rampal Singh, Kurry Sudaoli named Hindu High School. This School was opened in 1918. Now a days it is known as Mahatma Gandhi Inter College.
In 1960 Mr. Firoz Gandhi, the then Member of Parliament had initiated to establish first degree college in the district which is now famous as Firoz Gandhi College. The college is affilitaed with Kanpur University.
At present time, there are 9 degree colleges, 6 Sanskrit colleges, 143 Highschool/ Intermediate colleges, 399 Senior Basic school and 1908 primary schools
